Pilots House
Built
1868 and manned through to 1933 believed to be the first house contructed
in an area that was then known as Bellinger Heads. The pilot's role was
to safely navigate vessels through the treacherous Bellinger heads river
entrance. Ceased operation when the steam railway was introduced to the
mid-north coast.

River Sailing Club
Popular
local sailing club which attracts many sailing events to the Kalang and
Bellinger Rivers. Enjoy the colourful sailing vessels as they compete
in various races.
The Drougher
Remains
Remains
of a paddle wheel driven, steam powered vessel which plied its trade in
the Bellinger valley during the cedar getting hey-day of the late 1800's.
One of the best examples of this type of vessel on the east coast of Australia.
Old Marshall's

of pioneer family's homestead which was situated on Marshall's Island.

occasion witness the unique site of cattle swimming accross Back Creek
onto Marshall's Island.
Dredge
Pipes
When
commercial traffic was using the Bellinger and Kalang Rivers the navigation
channels were kept clear by a government provided dredge. Some of the
dredge pipes that were used in this activity remain on the river banks
till this day.

Heritage
listed historic hotel rebuilt in 1927 after being destroyed by fire. Enjoy

Old Bottle

display of old bottles retrieved by the Captain of the Water Rat III from
the murky depths of the Kalang River at the site of the Ellis brothers
logging mill established in the late 1800's.

The Kalang and Bellinger Rivers have a total catchment
area of 1119 square km with a proportion of that area lying in the world
heritage area of Dorrigo National Park.
The
Bellinger river rises in New England National Park at point Lookout, 5250ft
above sea level.
The river systems were first discovered by surveyor Hodgkinsin in 1841.
In the early days cedar was a major resource for the area with the rivers
being used as the main transport system. The first load of cedar was sent
down the Bellinger in 1847.
The first Bellinger river pilot Thomas Stewart arrived in1868 and operated
a river pilot service till 1933.
